Crews Battle Huge Building Fire In South Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A large fire broke out late Sunday night at a building in the 700 block of E. Lake St. in south Minneapolis.

Minneapolis firefighters responded shortly before 11:00 p.m. Sunday and quickly evacuated all of the apartments. A third alarm was called after about 15 minutes. The three-story building at Chicago Avenue and Lake Street has businesses on the ground floor and apartments on the top two floors.

Firefighters first tried entering for an offensive attack, but encountered heavy smoke, and were forced to back out and switch to a defensive exterior attack. Smoke and fire were still billowing from the building into the early morning hours.

There’s no information yet on any injuries or how the fire started.
