(CNET) — Police Chief Jim Hopper smokes up a storm in Stranger Things season 3, and he’s not the only character who lights up. All that puffing is pretty factually accurate to 1985, the year the Netflix hit series is set. But expect to see less smoking on the streaming network, which says it plans to cut down on depictions of smoking in upcoming productions.
“Going forward, all new projects that we commission with ratings of TV-14 or below for series or PG-13 or below for films, will be smoking and e-cigarette free — except for reasons of historical or factual accuracy,” Netflix said in a statement obtained by CNET sister site ComicBook.com.
The statement also said that in shows aimed at older viewers, “there’ll be no smoking or e-cigarettes unless it’s essential to the creative vision of the artist or because it’s character-defining (historically or culturally important).”

NEW YORK (AP) — Andy Warhol transcended a photographer’s copyright by transforming a picture of a vulnerable and uncomfortable Prince into an artwork that made the singer an “iconic, larger-than-life figure,” a judge ruled Monday.
U.S. District Judge John G. Koeltl in Manhattan sided with the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts over renowned photographer Lynn Goldsmith.
The case tested whether the legendary artist who died in 1987 made fair use of a 1981 picture of the famed late singer when he created a series of 16 artworks that became known as the “Prince Series.” The series contained 12 silkscreen paintings, two screen prints on paper and two drawings.
The judge noted that Goldsmith believed photographs she took of Prince in her New York City studio revealed that he was “not a comfortable person” and was a “vulnerable human being.”
In 1984, Vanity Fair licensed one of Goldsmith’s black-and-white studio portraits of Prince from her December 1981 shoot for $400 and commissioned Warhol to create an illustration of Prince for an article titled “Purple Fame,” Koeltl wrote. He noted that the article said it featured a special portrait for Vanity Fair by Andy Warhol and contained a copyright attribution credit for the portrait that cited a “source photograph” by Goldsmith.
Koeltl said Warhol’s artworks were in “stark contrast” to the original black-and-white photograph after the artist applied “loud, unnatural” colors.
“The Prince Series works can reasonably be perceived to have transformed Prince from a vulnerable, uncomfortable person to an iconic, larger-than-life figure,” the judge said. “The humanity Prince embodies in Goldsmith’s photograph is gone. Moreover, each Prince series work is immediately recognizable as a ‘Warhol’ rather than as a photograph of Prince — in the same way that Warhol’s famous representations of Marilyn Monroe and Mao are recognizable as ‘Warhols,’ not as realistic photographs of those persons.”
Koeltl said Warhol changed the picture so much that his artworks reflect the opposite mood of Goldsmith’s photo.
Goldsmith, a pioneering photographer known for unique portraits of famous musicians, claims a 2016 publication of the Warhol artwork destroyed a high-profile licensing opportunity. Her lawyer promises to appeal.
“Obviously we and our client are disappointed with the fair use finding, which continues the gradual erosion of photographers’ rights in favor of famous artists who affix their names to what would otherwise be a derivative work of the photographer and claim fair use by making cosmetic changes,” attorney Barry Werbin said in an email.
He said he hoped an appeal “will be successful and pull in the reigns of transformative use where photography is concerned.”

The “Good as Hell” singer tweeted Thursday night that a security guard at Milwaukee’s Summerfest “tackled and attacked” her team and “slapped and manhandled” a stylist.
“That was the best show ever,” Lizzo wrote, “but I feel like I can’t even celebrate cuz RACISM don’t matter if you a headliner.”
Tonight was beautiful. You are beautiful. But the struggle ain’t over. Racism and bigotry don’t care if you’re a headliner. Thank you @summerfest. We will be filing a complaint against that bigoted “security” guard and I hope you’ll be cooperative in seeking justice. xoxo pic.twitter.com/bt3J5Cy1AS
Lizzo, whose music career blossomed in the Twin Cities before she moved to Los Angeles, said that she will file a complaint against the guard, adding that she hopes for Summerfest to work with her in addressing the issue.
Summerfest responded via Twitter, saying that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that racism will not be tolerated in any form.
Lizzo has asked for fans to send her any footage they might have of the security guard.

The town celebrates her life every year, with tours of her home, and displays of music and movie memorabilia.
This year some significant anniversaries are making the festival even more popular.
One of her most well-known movies — “The Wizard of Oz” — was first shown 80 years ago.
This month also marks 50 years since Judy Garland died.
“Grand Rapids is not easy to get to, but we have people here from Texas, from Indiana, from Ohio, from Wisconsin. They have come from all over the country — from California — because they want to be with other people who feel about her the way they do. They want to share the joy,” historian John Fricke said.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Whether you’re seeing the latest superhero action flick, or date night romantic comedy, an evening at the theater is an experience beyond just the movie.
And one particular film at the Showplace Icon on June 5 showcased a humbling history lesson of the sacrifice so many made on June 6, 75 years ago.
The movie theater was one of many across the country showing “Saving Private Ryan” in honor of the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, when Allied forces invaded France in June 1944 and ultimately turned the tide of World War II.
Navy veteran Andy Johnson came to the theater with his father Dave, an Army veteran.
“Just tremendous. I think we need to remember those guys,” Andy Johnson said.
“Saving Private Ryan” is known as one of the most realistic war films ever made. It opens with a dramatic, and at times horrific, depiction of the Normandy beach invasions on D-Day.
“You look at all these guys that gave sacrifices for their country, never really had a chance to live like you and I did. They just got killed or wounded,” Dave Johnson said. “It’s always heartbreaking for me to see these things.”
Dave Carlson of Edina saw the movie when it premiered in 1998. He came back to see it again.
“It’s interesting to look at the guys and see how young they are, and imagine the real guys who went through this not knowing what they were getting into, not understanding the full totality and scope, yet they carried that responsibility, that sense of duty,” Carlson said.
Thousands of Allied soldiers died on that fateful day, often remembered through black and white photos. Steven Spielberg’s award-winning film recreated those images into a cinematic experience that once again hit the silver screen.
Linda Haight had never seen the movie, but got a ticket to better understand what her father and so many more went through.
“He was in the Army. He was in the Germany area. I think it was 69th battalion, and what I’ve read about that is they were the ones that came across the concentration camps,” Haight said. “I’ve been to Normandy and seen, I’ve been there, the big craters in the ground. It’s very moving.”
Much like the movie she was about to witness for the first time, giving her a glimpse into the past, and a reminder to be thankful for their service.
“Greatest generation,” Haight said. “We got to remember those guys.”

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Minnesota’s own global music icon is releasing a new album on Friday. The album titled “Originals” features 15 songs written by Prince that are being released from the vault, but some of the songs may sound familiar.
The iconic, Minnesota musician actually wrote hits like “Manic Monday,” “Nothing Compares 2 U,” and “Jungle Love,” but other artists ended up turning those tracks into hits.
“He absolutely could have had these massive hits for himself but for one reason or another it didn’t fit in to what he wanted to do at that time so he gave them away,” Jim Novak, retail music buyer at Electric Fetus in Minneapolis, said.
Now, more than three years after his death, fans will hear Prince’s version of the hits on the new 15-track compilation.
“It’s like the original artist sketches,” Novak said. ““I’m a sucker for the Prince ballads, so he wrote this great ballad that he gave to Kenny Rogers, of all people, in the ’80s, and to hear his version of that. I’m excited to hear it.”
At the Electric Fetus, a place Prince himself was known to frequent, fans and workers alike couldn’t wait to grab the new album.
“I want to have it in my hand,” long-time Prince fan Rene Gonzalez said. “I’ve already pre-ordered. I’ve got the purple vinyl and CD.”
This isn’t the first album released since Prince’s passing. In 2018, “Piano and a Microphone 1983” was released. This album, as well as the new one coming out, were both mostly written in the ’80s.
“Obviously he was a volcano of creativity,” Novak said.
Novak says this won’t be the last album to emerge from the Paisley Park vault.
“There could be a hundred albums in there that are just waiting to be heard,” Novak said.
For years to come, even though he’s not around, fans will still have a way to hear new music from the legend himself.
“Hopefully they’ll keep on rolling new music out cause we want it and we want it bad,” Gonzalez said.
The album will be released Friday exclusively on Tidal, Jay-Z’s steaming service. According to Novak, Prince had a relationship with Jay-Z and previously made agreements to release some of his work on the platform.
The album will be released on other streaming services and in stores on June 21. The Electric Fetus says they will receive the Vinyl version in July.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — We fully acknowledge here at WCCO-TV that Thursday nights just won’t be the same. After 12 seasons, TV’s top comedy went out with a bang.
“The Big Bang Theory” followed Sheldon, a theoretical physicist, and his fellow intellects through the ups and downs of young adulthood.
As Susan-Elizabeth Littlefield discovered, Minnesota has a Sheldon of its own.
The Blaine-Anoka Airport. It’s a curious place for a bunch of teens to be spending a Thursday night. There were screens involved, but they were using them to create simulations.
“I would say the Sheldon in the room is Yelizir Derkachev. He’s a really, really unique individual. Love him to pieces,” said Mary Albright, Civil Air Patrol Science competitors instructor. “Thinks on a different plane than the rest of us.”
Yelizir Derkachev (credit: CBS)
A scene that played out in real time, when Minnesota’s young Sheldon tried to explain to me his satellite transmittance theory, and the patent he has filed. Yelizir is also working on a live-action video game, and a formula to make computer transmissions more efficient.
The 16-year-old St. Anthony Village High School student fell in love with space in the third grade after finding a video on YouTube. The son of Russian immigrants, Yelizir spends his free time in a room full of standout students. They are young members of the Civil Air Patrol, kids who are obsessed with space and compete in science and math competitions.
The parents of these students find comfort in the quirky characters and vast popularity of “The Big Bang Theory.”
“On TV they’re viewed as total geeks, and it’s funny and it’s humorous. And yet our children are very funny and humorous at the same time,” said Mila Belair, mother of a Civil Air Patrol Science competitor.
As for those comparisons to “Young Sheldon,” Yelizir is flattered.
“I’m honored by that. I think that Sheldon’s very cool,” he said.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — “The Big Bang Theory” has captured hearts for 12 years. Fan favorites like Sheldon and Penny have offered viewers every range of emotions.
“You can kind of quote-unquote feel like that’s a friend, right? That there’s a shared experience that you’re having,” said Rich Lee, a professor of psychology at the University of Minnesota.
It’s a called a parasocial relationship.
“We’ve relationships in the past with TV reporters, or when a baseball team we root for loses,” Lee said. “That in turn kind of feeds our own sense of belonging and connection, and of course, that’s just fundamental to our identity.”
Often times, people will identify with a character.
(credit: Warner Bros. Television)
“The range of emotions they’re doing through and their relational experiences are things we can relate to,” Lee said.
Watching a show, especially one that air the same time each week, is also a routine that gives people a comfortable and safe place in a chaotic world. But, what if the character is nothing like you?
“There are some who talk about how we have an ideal self,” Lee said.
For Lee, that show was “Thirtysomething.” He and his friends would watch it in college.
“The reason we loved watching it was there was an aspirational quality to it,” he said.
Finally, Lee also points out that watching television is often a shared experience, especially now with social media.
“We might have an attachment with characters, but it’s in part because it allows us to talk about that with another person,” he said.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Some special military spouses are being celebrated. The Mall of America asked people to submit stories in honor of Military Spouse Appreciation Day. As a thank you, they gave five Minnesotans a day of pampering and fun.
The Brandenbergs get a night away from their Carver County home. They’re staying at the Radisson Blu at Mall of America as part of the celebration.
Jeremy Brandenberg recently retired after 16 years in the Army Reserves. He believes it’s his wife Arielle who deserves the thanks: she had their first child on her own and has helped Jeremy cope with life after deployment.
“It’s important to recognize the spouses also that all the sacrifices that they do and go through,” Jeremey said.
“No one teaches you how to cope with depression, anxiety, PTSD and the things they’ve seen and you just have to figure it out,” Arielle said
There’s an itinerary filled with fun, from rides and experiences for the kids to a massage for Arielle and dinner out. The Mall of America plans it all and it’s all donated as part of Military Spouse Appreciation Day.
“I feel pretty lucky that I get to have this day to go and enjoy our kids and our family and the things that we’ve gone through,” Arielle Brandenberg said.
Veteran Tony Nelson manages life in Owatonna for their five kids while his wife, Capt. Dana Nelson works as an RN with the Air Force Reserves. She’ll deploy to Qatar this summer.
“It’s difficult at times, but you just make it work,” Tony Nelson said.
Capt. Nelson and the rest of the family will join Tony and his youngest child Eli at the mall. While they play, he’s looking forward to a little R & R.
“It’s nice to be appreciated for making the sacrifices you have to make,” Tony Nelson said.
On Saturday, the five families will head to the Twins game.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Country music fans are flocking to downtown Minneapolis Friday night to see Garth Brooks, who is playing shows at U.S. Bank Stadium Friday and Saturday.
When it comes to his fans here in Minnesota, Brooks has got nothing but love.
“You ask any artist, where your stuff is accepted and loved, that’s where you want to play,” Brooks said. ”And this place has been that place for me since the start of my career, which I don’t get because I’m not from here, I don’t dress like anybody here, but everyone’s been real nice to me.”

Brooks says he’s excited to get out and perform for all the country fans in town. He’s looking forward to a fun night with lots of help singing from the crowd.
“It is a joy, an honor and a pleasure to play here,” Brooks said. “This is the one the crew comes running to because they know it’s going to be a fabulous weekend.”
Someplace else the crew comes running to? Manny’s. Brooks told us the crew can’t wait to play here because it means a meal at the famous steakhouse.
Brooks also named some of his favorite songs to perform. They include “Calling Baton Rouge,” “The Dance,” and a song that’s all about his wife, Trisha Yearwood.
“Maybe the best written song I’ve ever gotten to put my voice to, I would have to think is she’s ‘Stronger Than Me.’ Still, I can’t sing it without crying,” Brooks said. “I’m married to that woman, so it’s cool.”
Yearwood is hosting a special tailgate ahead of Saturday night’s sold-out show at 3 p.m. at Downtown Plaza East.

NEW YORK (AP) — The memoir Prince was working on at the time of his death is coming out Oct. 29.
Random House confirmed Monday to The Associated Press that “The Beautiful Ones” will combine a Prince unfinished manuscript with rare photos, scrapbooks and lyrics. First announced just weeks before his 2016 death, the 288-page book will include an introduction by Dan Piepenbring, whom Prince had chosen as a collaborator. The memoir is an exclusive partnership with the Prince Estate.
“‘The Beautiful Ones’ is the deeply personal account of how Prince Rogers Nelson became the Prince we know: the real-time story of a kid absorbing the world around him and creating a persona, an artistic vision, and a life, before the hits and the fame that would come to define him,” Random House announced.
“The book will span from Prince’s childhood to his early years as a musician to the cusp of international stardom, using Prince’s own writings, a scrapbook of his personal photos, and the original handwritten lyric sheets for many of his most iconic songs, which he kept at Paisley Park. The book depicts Prince’s evolution through deeply revealing, never-before-shared images and memories and culminates with his original handwritten treatment for his masterwork, `Purple Rain.”‘
Piepenbring’s introduction will touch upon Prince’s final days, “a time when Prince was thinking deeply about how to reveal more of himself and his ideas to the world, while retaining the mystery and mystique he’d so carefully cultivated.” Piepenbring, whom Prince had called “my brother Dan” and “not a yes man at all,” is a Paris Review advisory editor who also contributes to The New Yorker.
Prince died three years ago, on April 21, from an accidental overdose of fentanyl at the age of 57. During a Manhattan nightclub appearance in March 2016, he told the audience that “The good people of Random House have made me an offer that I can’t refuse.” He promised the book would start with his “first memory” and “hopefully” continue to his rain-drenched Super Bowl halftime performance in 2007.
In 2018, literary agent Esther Newberg told Variety that Prince had completed more than 50 handwritten pages.
The book’s editor, Chris Jackson, said in a statement that “The Beautiful Ones” was “a beautiful tribute to his life.”
“It’s also much more than that: it’s a genuinely moving and energizing literary work, full of Prince’s ideas and vision, his voice and image,” said Jackson, whose other authors have included comedian Trevor Noah and Ta-Nehisi Coates. “It’s a treasure not just for Prince fans but for anyone who wants to see one of our greatest creative artists and original minds at work on his greatest creation: himself.”

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Grand Café, a restaurant where every detail is cared for, was named one of the best restaurant of the year in 2018 by Food and Wine Magazine.
Chef Jamie Malone has a story about everything in her restaurant: her mangalitsa ham comes from a woman in Tennessee who only sells to her and acclaimed chef Sean Brock. Malone said her foie gras mousse with orange glaze is an old technique and recipe from the 1800s.
The rise of Malone’s south Minneapolis restaurant, Grand Café, is nothing crazy.
It was a solid neighborhood restaurant for years, but when Malone and her team took it over in 2017, it started getting national attention and her Paris Brest filled with foie gras mousse in 2018 was named the dish of the year.
“We want to hide the technique, we don’t want you to worry about that, we want you to have a good time,” Malone said.
Malone started in the restaurant business as a teenager, waiting tables in the small town of Mahtomedi, although she said she always had visions of being a chef.
“That’s what I wanted to do, but you don’t know how to get in,” said Malone. “It’s so intimidating. I wanted to be in a restaurant in any capacity.”
After 15 years cooking in Minneapolis at La Belle Vie and at the sustainable seafood restaurant Sea Change, Grand Cafe is fully her vision.
“How do we extract the important things of fine dining and how do we let the other things that aren’t important fall by the wayside?” Malone said.
The dining experience isn’t as fussy as you might expect looking at the sheer beauty of the food. Part of that is the environment of the dining room.
Malone chose lots of soft pink and bright fresh flowers.
“It’s like openly romantic. It’s OK. We don’t have to side-step that,” said Malone. “It’s a soft, sweet, romantic place.”
The feminine side of the design is also reflected in Malone’s staff. One of the finest restaurants in the Upper Midwest is run by women.
“We hire and promote the best people, a lot of them usually happen to be women,” she said.
Malone’s General Manager is Nikki Clocker, a St. Cloud native, her chef de cuisine is Britt St. Claire, the chef who helped open the small tasting-menu restaurant, Birdie.
Malone said she thinks there should be more women in head chef roles.
“You can be feminine and be soft and gentle and still be a commanding leader,” Malone said. “In kitchens, you’re used to the loudest guy in the room getting the job and we need to change that direction,” Malone said.
Malone is a finalist for Best Chef: Midwest in the 2018 James Beard Awards, along with two other Minneapolis chefs, Ann Kim from Young Joni and Pizzaria Lola, and Christina Nguyen, the chef at Hai Hai and Hola Arepa. They’ll find out in mid-May if any of them have won.
“We all work so hard, myself, and the whole team. We feel passionately about what we’re doing,” Malone said. “You don’t feel like you deserve to be there, I’m still processing. But it’s great.”

(CBS Local)– While many comedians got their start in places like New York and Los Angeles, Chad Daniels began his comedy career in Minneapolis.
The father of a 19-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter uses stories of fatherhood in his stand-up routine that has taken him all around America. Daniels says that the road work has been key in helping him find his voice as a comedian.
“There’s a lot of times where I go to LA and these guys talk about paying their dues by sitting outside The Comedy Store for three hours,” said Daniels in an interview with CBS Local. “I’ve slept in a Walmart parking lot only because they have cameras. If I got murdered, I would want my kids to have closure.”
Daniels has a new comedy special on Amazon called “Dad Chaniels.” While many of his contemporaries are doing their specials on Netflix and Comedy Central, the Minnesota native decided Amazon was the place to be.
“Once I record something, I want it out the next day,” said Daniels. “That’s not how it works. It was tough waiting around, but that does give you time to write and reload the chamber a little bit with new material. Even growing up for me, I had to seek out Richard Pryor. I wouldn’t bump into his comedy.”
While Daniels’ kids are a big part of his act, he always makes sure to clear things with his son and daughter before using the material on stage or in a special.
“My daughter doesn’t really know much about my comedy, which is wonderful,” said Daniels. “My son is old enough. He’s in college and they’ll go to a party and people are playing it just because they’re from the same hometown. He doesn’t mind. Anytime I’ve written a bit about them or a story, I’ve always gone through it with them before I’ve brought it to the stage. I’m willing to pay for therapy, but not if I’m the cause of it.”
Chad’s comedy special “Dad Chaniels” is available now on Amazon Prime.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Rep. Ilhan Omar is set to appear as a guest on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
“Our next guest made history this year as one of the first two Muslim-American women elected to Congress, and the very first woman of color to represent the very great state of Minnesota,” Colbert said in introducing her, as shown in the preview clip above.
This marks Omar’s first appearance giving an interview on the program, her office confirmed.
Colbert has invited a number of politicians to chat with him on his show, especially as the host has taken a more overtly satirical and critical view of the Trump presidency.
Among the topics Omar is said to have talked with Colbert during the taping of the show are her comments and apologies about Twitter posts, her spending time with Attorney General Keith Ellison, whose congressional seat she won after he vacated it, and Wednesday’s bill about repealing the travel ban.
Colbert’s house band, by the way, can be heard playing a snipped of Stevie Wonder’s “Superwoman” as Omar enters the stage.

Lyft and Buick will both add incentives for drivers who want a ride. Lyft, in partnership with Captain Morgan, will give users ages 21 and older a $20 credit for a ride on each of three days: Friday, April 5 to Sunday, April 7 from 7 p.m. until 3 a.m.
Buick will continue its annual Final Four Grab a Buick campaign, offering people free rides from the Minneapolis Convention Center, which is hosting Fan Fest, to downtown locations within a 5-7 mile radius. It will not, however, drive people to private homes.
